Alice drew in a breath as their launch nosed into Dubrovnik’s enclosed harbour. Tall, pale stone walls and battlements towered above bobbing fishing boats, small steamers and launches like theirs delivering passengers from the few larger vessels moored offshore.

“That’s the Mulo Tower over there,” said Dorothy, who was poring over her guidebook.

The tower looked more like a fort to Alice. It curved round the entrance to the harbour, its small windows set far back into its thick stone walls.

“It looks impressive,” said Sonny.

“It was built in the fourteenth century as an important defence against enemy ships,” continued Dorothy.

“Dorothy loves her guidebooks,” Sonny whispered to Alice while waggling his eyebrows. “Be prepared for lots of facts today. My history lessons sometimes go on for quite a while.”

Alice swallowed a giggle as she watched her father and Dorothy hunch over the guidebook together.
